A Rich History

The Legacy of Love Foundation, Inc. was established by the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In 1992, Liller Green’s business sense, foresight, and love for her sorority, led her to make a personal gift of $25,000 to establish the Scholarship Endowment Foundation, with the stipulation that the chapter match the gift within five years. The members of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter matched the gift in one year! The funds were used to establish the Scholarship Endowment Foundation as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.

To increase the fund, a five-year Legacy of Love Campaign was initiated in 1997 to raise $250,000. In 2002, the Scholarship Endowment Foundation honored Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter members who contributed towards meeting the goal in record time by successfully raising $250,000 from within the chapter membership. Their efforts enabled the Foundation to complete Phase I of its Capital Campaign.

In 2004, the name of the Scholarship Endowment Foundation, Inc. was changed to The Legacy of Love Foundation, Inc. The new name reflected the expansion of the non-profit organization’s mission beyond scholarship awards to include “support for community-based programs in the areas of physical and mental health, economic empowerment, educational excellence and the arts.” Inspired by the dedication of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter’s members to the mission, the Foundation’s Board of Directors established a new goal of $1,000,000. As of 2009, the endowment had grown to over $400,000.

Since 1993, more than $100,000 in scholarships has been awarded to Philadelphia’s community of college-bound high school seniors. And since the implementation of the Men Making a Difference Awards Gala in 2004, more than 30 community-based organizations have been recipients of designated grants.
